Essentials Money Importance of Insurance

It is sensible to insure your possessions and belongings whilst you are studying at the University.

    Accommodation

    Halls of Residence

Insurance can be arranged directly through the University; an insurance charge will be added to your first accommodation invoice, but you will have until the 10th of October to opt out of the insurance scheme, if you wish to make alternative arrangements.

Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd. provide a block personal possessions insurance package for students living in Halls and this is included in the Halls fee. Full details of the cover and exclusions are available from .

    Private Housing

In private housing, you will need to arrange your own insurance for your belongings. Make sure that all your belonging are insured (including clothing, computer, electrical equipment, jewellery, etc) as well as checking what you are covered against (e.g. fire, flood, theft etc.).

Student houses are often targeted by thieves, and as such you are recommended to insure your possessions.

    Travelling from Abroad

We strongly advise you make arrangements in your own country to insure yourself and your belongings when travelling to and from the university.

    Medical Insurance

Students staying for six months or less should be sure they are covered either by the European Union (EU) reciprocal arrangements (for EU students), by their home University or by private insurance arrangements made before they arrive in Britain.

Employers may request that disclaimers are signed by a representative of the University. All such disclaimers must be referred to the University Insurance Officer (extension 8309, email insurance@reading.ac.uk) and not signed by departmental staff.

    Private Vehicles

If a student or member of staff wishes to use their own vehicle whilst carrying out placement work, they must check that their own vehicle insurance cover is adequate, i.e 'occasional business use'.
