Essentials Your graduation and beyond On graduation day Your ceremony

Your ceremony

Each ceremony lasts approximately 40 – 60 minutes.

Guests with wristbands should make their way to the guest entrance of the Great Hall by the times indicated. Announcements will be made in the main marquee when the doors are open. Guests will be seated in the Great Hall prior to the arrival of the graduating students. Seats are allocated on a first-come, first served basis.

Graduands:
You will be guided to your seat at the back of the Great Hall by your Procession Marshal and when it is time for your award to be presented, they will process you around the back of the Great Hall to the stage where the University Orator will present graduands individually by name and in the following order:

  • Higher degrees (Doctors, Masters)
  • Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates
  • Bachelor degrees
  • Foundation degrees

Your degree classification will not be mentioned.

You will ascend a short flight of steps, with a handrail, on to the platform as your name is called by the Orator. You will doff your cap to the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor, who will doff their cap to you in return. There will be a photographer to your left capturing this moment. You will then turn to face the audience and then descend the steps, where you will be directed to collect your graduation pack (this will include your degree certificate) and back to a seat for the remainder of the ceremony.

You will be given a free sustainable tote bag in which to carry your pack.
