Food and nutrition scientist given honorary degree

 A leading Reading researcher who has contributed to the global advancement of human nutrition has been awarded an honorary degree from the 色狗导航.

Professor Christine Williams OBE, who worked at the University for more than 25 years and is now an Emeritus Professor, was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science at a ceremony on Tuesday 5 July.

Professor Williams was the first Hugh Sinclair Professor of Human Nutrition at the University’s Hugh Sinclair Unit. Her research on the impact of dietary fats on human health significantly contributed to the centre's success as one of the premier hubs of excellence for nutritional teaching and research in the UK. Since 1976 she has published more than 200 peer-reviewed research articles. 

During her time at the University, Professor Williams held a number of roles, including Dean of Life Sciences and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. 

Professor Williams has served as the President of the UK Nutrition Society (1998-2001) and as a member and Chair of the Agri-Food Committee and Food Security Strategy Panel. She was appointed OBE in the Queen’s Honours list in 2013 for her contribution to UK Higher Education and nutritional sciences.

Today, she continues to carry out roles as a trustee and member of several boards and advisory committees concerned with food, environment and health.

Speaking at the ceremony before Professor Williams received her honorary degree, Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the 色狗导航, said: “Professor Christine Williams has devoted more than 25 years of dedicated service to this University. Her leadership in nutritional science has shaped research strategy and policy in the UK, and she holds a special place as a mentor and role model for many of us on this stage today.”
