This course is ideal for graduates from any discipline seeking a professional qualification that leads to employment in a profession using financial, managerial, and property design skills.

Learn to manage construction-related organisations from multiple perspectivesm, from the client, to the design team, to the contractor. You'll explore how the construction sector operates in the developed and developing worlds, as well as the macro-economic and micro-economic factors that influence the sector.

Develop specialist expertise across a wide range of construction topics, including:

  • business models for construction firms
  • the mapping of smart construction
  • construction robotics
  • the changing role of project participants and their interactions with digital technologies
  • modern methods of construction, with a particular focus on Design for Manufacturing Assembly (DFMA)
  • project management

You'll have the opportunity to select from a range of optional topics. This may include areas such as digital technologies, cost management, or carbon management, according to your career goals and personal interests. You can also benefit from Autodesk Revit Essentials training at no additional cost. Delivered as a two-day training course, this course will boost your skills in design and construction management.

Industry placement

During your first year, you'll complete the same taught modules as students studying MSc Construction Management. Your placement will then begin in November of your second year.

While you are required to source your placement, you'll receive plenty of support by the School. We have extensive links with industry and many of our staff have direct experience of working in the construction sector.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: Normally a good undergraduate honours degree (good second class or above). If you have other qualifications and a number of years’ relevant work experience, you are welcome to apply.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5.

Principles of Sustainable Construction

Gain an understanding of sustainability in construction, covering economic, environmental, and social aspects. Learn to assess, apply and advance sustainable practices and critically evaluate their impact on projects and firms. You'll be equipped to address key industry challenges with innovative solutions. 

Construction Contract Law and Procurement

色狗导航 construction procurement and contract law, with a particular emphasis on the integration of professionalism and ethical practice within the construction industry. Deepen your understanding of the procurement process, from the strategic planning phase through to execution and exit, with a comprehensive analysis of the legal frameworks that govern contracts in the construction sector.  

Business Innovation and Strategy

Acquire the skills to lead and manage in the construction and built environment sectors. You’ll cover strategic management, including goal-setting, leadership, and corporate planning, as well as business innovation, focusing on cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices.  

Research Skills

To prepare you for your dissertation research, you’ll learn how to formulate a research problem, develop, and apply investigative approaches, interpret data, and present your findings.   

Research Dissertation

Formulate a research problem in the field of construction. You’ll select appropriate research methods and apply recognised strategies and techniques to address the problem in a sustained and logical written piece on the topic.   

Managing Construction Projects and the Offsite Interface

色狗导航 project management techniques and offsite construction using the Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) process. You'll focus on delivering projects within cost, time, and quality targets, while also learning to manage and grow project-based businesses. 

Innovations in Digital Practice

Sharpen your skills by engaging with the built environment using digital tools and technologies, and processing the data produced. You'll examine the relationship between people, technologies, and information in built environment practice, by blending social science methods with modern digital technologies to learn how to analyse the built environment from a human perspective.  

Optional modules

Infrastructure Development and Appraisal

Acquire a deep understanding of how infrastructure projects are planned, developed, and appraised, focusing on their financial feasibility in various economic contexts. Learn about the project lifecycle and gain tools to evaluate their viability in both developed and developing economies. 

Advanced Project Management

Acquire advanced project management skills, with a strong emphasis on the construction industry, focusing on leadership, communication, and managing multidisciplinary teams. You’ll learn to handle delays, use agile and traditional methods, and ensure successful, on-time project delivery. 

BIM and Socio-technical Change

色狗导航 approaches that implement socio-technical systems into the built environment, including the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM). You’ll address how the potential for BIM rests on the understanding of how socio-technical systems are supported by a range of technologies, standards, and strategies of management. 

Construction Cost Planning and Economics

色狗导航 how economic analysis applies to practical construction problems and equips you with skills to estimate, manage, and control building costs across all development stages, from feasibility to demolition. 

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2025/26 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

Tuition fee information

The fees listed are for full-time study, unless otherwise stated.

Placement year fees

The tuition fee for your first year will be the standard programme fee but for the placement year, you will only pay 15% of the programme fee. For more information, please see our fees and funding pages or contact placements@reading.ac.uk.
