Our MA Film and Creative Enterprise allows you to combine your passion for the arts with studies in law, management and entrepreneurship.

On MA Film and Creative Enterprise, you’ll learn filmmaking skills, explore debates about style and meaning, and develop your understanding of industry trends and practices.

This MA programme is a collaboration, taught by three world-renowned schools at the 色狗导航 – the School of Arts and Communication Design, Henley Business School and the School of Law. You will be based in the department of Film, Theatre and Television, situated at the heart of the University’s Whiteknights campus.

Reading is one of the fastest-developing film hubs in the UK, with the construction of a major film studio just a few miles from our campus on the university’s Thames Valley Science Park. Reading is also only 25 minutes from London Paddington by train, meaning students can join regular theatre, cinema and film festival trips.

MA Film and Creative Enterprise ideal for those looking to develop a career as a filmmaker, creative producer, film programmer, or in the creative industries more generally. From the start of your studies you will engage with key critical ideas about film and television, while modules on entrepreneurship and management prepare you for professional work in this dynamic and creative field. To complete your studies, you will either write a dissertation or produce a short film.

The facilities and culture at our Minghella Studios are ideally suited to the MA Film and Creative Enterprise. Here you will be encouraged to collaborate, explore and experiment. You will learn from prestigious scholars as well as experienced industry professionals.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: Normally a suitable undergraduate honours degree (Second Class or above), or equivalent from a university outside the UK. You’ll need to show evidence of your commitment to film or television study and/or practice.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 6.0

Pre-sessional English language Programme

Our Pre-sessional English Programme is for international students who need to meet their degree programme English language requirements.

Our courses equip you with the skills and language needed for academic success, including critical thinking, self-reflection, learner autonomy, research skills and integrating sources. The Pre-sessional English Programme is accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP), which guarantees you will receive a high-quality student experience.

Structure

  • Modules

Compulsory modules

Exploring Screen Practices 

Develop production and filmmaking competencies through short practical projects supported by workshops and masterclasses. You’ll gain an understanding of the way in which creative processes relate to critical analysis, while enhancing a wide range of professional skills in field of screen media. 

Film: Creative Peaks and Industries 

色狗导航 common tropes and cross-pollinations across the creative peaks of film productions and movements from around the world. You’ll focus new cinemas and waves, and booms of production, analysing blockbusters along with indigenous landmarks to demonstrate how they compare and interrelate through portrayals of shared desires and concerns. 

Film Programming and Film Festivals 

Study different modes of programming and organising arthouse, alternative and experimental venues, as well as film festivals, exploring how the pool of world festivals influences funding and distribution of different productions. You’ll be taught through a range of dynamic seminars, workshops and group projects, led by academics and industry representatives. 

Film Project or Dissertation

Conduct independent research, with the advice and support of teaching staff, and demonstrate your knowledge and skills in film studies through an extended project. Your project will focus on a particular critical/theoretical issue or subject in the form of a short film, with supporting analytical documentation or an extended piece of writing. 

Optional modules

Screen Bodies

色狗导航 how diverse bodies move on screen and how their representation is shaped by culture, society, creative traditions, and conditions of production and reception. You’ll examine how the screen body generates meaning, as well as ethical issues of access to representation, visibility, marginalisation and consent.  

Financing for Creative Entrepreneurship 

色狗导航 the various forms of financing available to creative entrepreneurship, including debt, equity financing, not-for-profit, and alternative financing such as reward-based crowdfunding. Through examples of product commercialisation in creative industries, you’ll develop skills of cost-benefit analysis of a project and financial appraisal of new ventures. 

Adaption across Stage and Screen 

色狗导航 the processes of artistic adaptation in film, television and theatre, and engage with the critical, cultural, and political considerations surrounding this practice. You’ll gain an understanding of a broad range of adaptation practices, including page to stage/screen, fanfiction, intercultural retellings and documentary theatre. 

Management in Creative and Cultural Organisations 

色狗导航 organisations that are engaged in creative or cultural activities, and understand the challenges they face and how these influence the way they operate. You’ll examine how organisations from various sectors seek to promote (and control) creativity to enhance their innovation and efficiency. 

Data Protection and Emerging Issues in Copyright Law

色狗导航 data protection and copyright, including the legal protection afforded to privacy and personal data and the processing of personal information in the UK and EU regulatory framework. You’ll learn how to critically assess the day-to-day operation of data protection and copyright issues – including those related to creative work and authorship – and participate in cutting-edge discussions around scholarship and case law.

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2024/25 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £11,750

New international students: £25,850

Tuition fee information

With effect from 1 August 2021, new EU students will pay international tuition fees. For exceptions, please read .

Careers

The MA Film and Creative Enterprise is designed to improve the skills and employability of people passionate about the arts. Graduates of the programme will be in a strong position to pursue start-up opportunities on their own, take managerial roles in the creative sector, or embark on further scholarly research into the arts and creative industries.

Overall, 91.6% of graduates from the School of Arts and Communication Design are in work or further study within 15 months of graduation (based on our analysis of HESA data (c) HESA 2024, Graduate Outcomes Survey 2021/22, includes all School of Arts and Communication Design responders).
