Gain the fundamental tools of a professional economist with our MSc Economics degree, including how to assess a wide range of theoretical, empirical and policy-related issues.

Led by experts from the É«¹·µ¼º½’s Department of Economics, you’ll benefit from interactive, applied learning across a number of key areas. These include:

  • micro-principles of economic behaviour
  • macro-outcomes of national and global importance
  • methodological, theoretical and applied issues critical to the study and practice of economics and economic policy

We are one of the few universities to offer an optional Capstone Project module, designed to give you hands-on, real-world experience. Working in small groups and overseen by a faculty member, you will contribute to your degree by completing a project on behalf of an external organisation, such as:

  • not-for-profits organisations
  • nongovernmental organisations (NGOs).

Past projects have included: impact assessment of policy and business options, cost benefit analysis and advice to a local economic partnership on how to develop a strategy in response to the UK Govt’s new Industrial Strategy White Paper.

Develop in-depth research expertise

As part of your degree you'll work on a research dissertation. It's an opportunity for you to carry out independent research supervised in a specific topic or issue, and to contribute new insights to the current scholarly debate. You dissertation will be supervised by an expert in your area.

Our classes are small to allow for active participation. You will typically spend six to eight hours a week in lectures and supported classroom seminars, studying alongside academics, industry professionals and postgraduate colleagues. Entry requirements

Entry requirements: You should have a bachelor's honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:1 (2:2 for those whose degree contains a high level of economics content) or above.

To apply for this course, you must have an undergraduate degree in a numerate, quantitative or business-related discipline such as economics, business administration, finance, accounting, international trade, banking, financial management, public finance, mathematics, computer science, data science, geography.

Applications are also welcome from candidates with strong career experience in a relevant field.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5 (or equivalent)

Structure

  • Modules

Compulsory modules

Dissertation

Apply the skills and knowledge that you’ve gained by investigating an economic problem. You’ll develop a research design, provide analysis on relevant literature, draw conclusions from your analysis and demonstrate originality in your research.

Advanced Microeconomic Analysis

Examine advanced topics in microeconomics that incorporate mathematics including consumer theory, production theory, general equilibrium and welfare, game theory, decision-making under risk, and market failure.

Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis

É«¹·µ¼º½ a set of modern analytical, computational topics and methods in macroeconomic theory and policy. You’ll use programming techniques and software such as Dynare and MATLAB.

Econometrics I

Build your understanding and experience by applying core methods used in empirical research. You’ll develop skills in handling cross-sectional data using STATA and critically evaluate empirical research papers in economics.

Econometrics II

Learn advanced econometric methods in time series and panel data and empirical applications of those in macroeconomics and finance. You’ll also develop software skills with an introduction to R in computer workshops.

Optional modules

Introduction to Econometric Analysis

Establish a general understanding of econometrics, with an emphasis on the interpretation of basic linear regression results and their relevance in economic analysis.

Topics in Business Economics

You’ll conduct analysis of corporate decision-making such as price setting, output setting, mergers, and anti-competitive behaviour. You’ll also consider the role of market competition and the imperatives for government intervention.

The Economics of Financial Markets

Discover the fundamentals of financial markets and institutions, including how consumers and producers make decisions in a perfect capital market under certainty, the theory of choice under risk, and how asset prices are determined.

Development Economics

Understand the economics of developing countries by examining the microeconomic and macroeconomic issues of development. You’ll review research in different facets of development economics that use a wide range of research methods.

Economics of Social Policy

Study topics that reflect important and contemporary socio-economic policy issues and consider how economic analysis contributes to the solution of domestic and international social problems.

Capstone Project

Complete a project in a group on behalf of an external organisation, providing them with independent analysis and benefiting you with hands-on experience. An academic supervisor will provide your team with guidance throughout the project.

Advances in Causal Inference

As an introduction to advanced microeconomic techniques, you’ll develop econometric software skills by selecting and applying modern and widely used microeconometric techniques for applied research.

Applied Behavioural Economics

Applying psychology to a range of economic problems, you’ll develop an understanding of how psychological motives are expressed in economic models, how predictions can be tested, and their implications for policy and organisational design.

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2024/25 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.
