With this interdisciplinary course, you’ll be taught at both the 色狗导航’s Department of Geography and Environmental Science and School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, taking advantage of outstanding teaching environment and modern facilities.

Your studies will cater to a range of interests and career destinations, including modules that relate to:

  • contaminated and urban environments
  • the implications of, and solutions to, environmental change
  • issues affecting the management of agricultural and rural environments.

This programme is accredited by the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education (CEDHE), the education committee of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). CEDHE is the collective voice of the environmental sciences academic community and serves to enhance the quality of environmental education worldwide.

A programme accredited by CEDHE is assured to meet high standards, contains a strong component of practical, field and theoretical activities, and has excellent opportunities for training, work experience and links to the professional environmental sector.

Students enrolled on CEDHE-accredited programmes can apply for free Student Membership of the IES and for a fast-track route to membership once they graduate. This programme is aligned with the academic requirements for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) and starts graduates on a route towards becoming a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or Chartered Scientist (CSci).

 

Your learning environment

The course is shaped and developed through partnerships with industry professionals, and it promotes strong experiential learning including field-based and lab-based teaching.

Our custom-designed, specialised research facilities include:

  • laboratories
  • instrumentation for work in molecular ecology and biochemistry, environmental chemistry and environmental physics
  • experimental polytunnels
  • glasshouses.

You will also have access to superb, controlled environment facilities, as well as experimental farms, where you’ll have extensive opportunities for fieldwork.

The course also includes an optional, free-of-charge residential field class that provides real experience and allows you to put your theoretical knowledge into practice.

The MSc Environmental Management programme is designed to equip you with a thorough understanding of the scientific and socio-economic principles of environmental management, and skills applicable to a wide range of environmental careers.

Through a combination of core and optional modules, you’ll gain expertise in current regulatory processes. You will also develop the technical, research and business skills that underpin environmental management in society, industry and government. These skills include:

  • how to conduct and write an environmental risk assessment
  • the valuation of non-market goods and ecosystem services
  • team-working skills, by engaging with team-based learning
  • drafting policy briefings and tenders
  • producing and presenting consultancy reports
  • oral presentations.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: Normally an undergraduate honours degree (2:2 or above) in geography, environmental science, environmental studies, ecology, agriculture or a related field. Applicants from social science backgrounds such as economics or law may be considered. If you have no first degree but do have equivalent experience, you may also be considered.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5

Compulsory modules

Environmental and Waste Management

Examine how environmental and waste management are applied in professional settings and understand motivations for businesses and organisations. You’ll study environmental impact assessments and explore systems for minimizing environmental issues.

Ecosystem Services & Nature-based Solutions

Discover the role of ecosystem services, their consumption, management, and conservation, and explore nature-based solutions. Our researchers will share cutting edge information and knowledge and introduce you to case studies on the topic.

Skills for Independent Learning and Research

Familiarise yourself with the academic standards and integrity expected at postgraduate level. Gain skills and intellectual abilities to prepare yourself for the research project and for future career pathways.

Field Class

Gain hands-on experience in monitoring and assessing environmental issues in a real-world setting with a weeklong field class in a UK national park. You’ll learn how to identify, document, and evaluate the impact of human activities on the environment through essential field research techniques.

Research Project

Acquire the skills needed to devise, carry out and report a natural/social science-based project.

Optional modules

Quantitative Analysis of Environmental Data

色狗导航 commonly used statistical and graphical techniques for environmental data analysis. Acquire the skills to interpret and apply outputs from both classic and modern statistical methods using Minitab, along with freely-available remote-sensing toolboxes.

Concepts and Practices of Communication 

Discover and analyse how social and technological change in development contexts is influenced by communication processes, and explore the theories of communication for development, as well as how to design and implement communication strategies and interventions. You'll learn how to critically assess communication channels and approaches, while honing your ability to use communication effectively in development practice.

Soil Ecology Environment and Sustainability

色狗导航 the diversity of organisms living in soil, their adaptations to the soil habitat and their impact on the wider environment, with an emphasis on the role of soil (micro)organisms in global cycling of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, and their benefits on environmental sustainability. Through the associated laboratory work, you'll also gain practical experience of isolating, culturing and observation of soil organisms, and methods for measuring biologically-mediated biochemical processes. 

Environmental Consultancy

Collaborate within a team to execute a real environmental consultancy project and present findings to a panel of regulators and industry practitioners. You’ll gain valuable experience for your portfolio, showcasing competencies to future employers.

Environmental Pollution 

Acquire insights into the sources, transport, and toxicity of key environmental contaminants. You’ll learn to assess the impact of contaminants and interpret environmental data using contemporary methods. 

Preparing for Floods

色狗导航 key aspects of flood preparedness, spanning local to global scales, and encompassing flood forecasting, warning systems, response strategies, incident management, and community resilience building. You’ll also attend interactive seminars and visit the operational centre of the Global Flood Awareness System.

Air Pollution: Effects and Control

色狗导航 human-induced air pollution and the controversies on its effects and control measures. You’ll also gain an understanding of the science-politics interface in decision-making about air quality.

Climate Change

Examine the nature of climate change, its impacts, and methods of adaptation with respect to various parts of the world and different environments and communities.

Resource and Environmental Economics

Gain an understanding of resource and environmental economics, and learn how to apply economic principles to real world problems at the intersection of people, the economy, and the natural environment.

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2024/25 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £12,800

Tuition fee information

Scholarships

The newly introduced 色狗导航 Excellence Scholarship is available for students from every country in the world joining in the academic year 2025/26. The scholarship takes the form of a tuition fee reduction.

The Rotary Graduate Scholarship Programme also awards one scholarship for postgraduate study at Reading University in the academic year 2025/26, subject to the applicants’ studies, careers and community work fitting within Rotary’s area of focus, Protecting the Environment.

The 色狗导航 Master's Alumni Scholarship is funded by alumni for alumni.

The Scholarship is:

  • worth £3,000
  • open to all 色狗导航 students who have completed or are about to finish an undergraduate programme
  • designed to help contribute towards your living expenses and other study essentials.

What's more, all Reading graduates also get a 20% alumni discount on their tuition fees - subject to eligibility criteria - so there is the potential to combine this Scholarship with the discount.

After completing our MSc Environmental Management course, you will be ideally placed to work in:

  • firms with in-house roles covering sustainability and implementing environmental law.

This course will also equip you with the skills and knowledge for further study in a related subject. Previous 色狗导航 graduates have gone on to funded PhD projects.
