This joint course brings together two complementary disciplines. You’ll benefit from the expertise of academics in our Institute of Education and in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences.

You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how the mind functions, and how that combines with sociological factors to influence the educational experience.

The course offers excellent training for a career or further study in psychology, and also prepares you for postgraduate teacher training and routes to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

In psychology, you will have the opportunity to design and implement your own research project. You’ll explore historical and cutting-edge research – its methods, applications and unresolved issues – and learn how to evaluate and carry out research.

Understanding the Theory and Practice of Mentoring

Reflect on the role and purpose of mentoring in different settings, engaging with your own experiences as a mentor or mentee. Working in groups to explore different case studies, you'll build an understanding of mentoring best practice.

Project

Conduct an independent piece of original research that involves literature review, planning, ethical considerations, data collection, data analysis, and a final written project report.

Gain a broader understanding on the political and legislative context within which various forms of education and childcare have developed. You will explore shifting ideologies underpinning attempts to reform children’s services over recent times and the notion of an integrated children’s workforce.  

Deafness and Blindness in Education

Understand the types and causes of blindness and deafness in general, reflecting on the underlying challenges. By reflecting on these challenges, you'll consider different educational pedagogies for supporting those with a sensory impairment.

Development of Transferable Skills through a School Placement

Observe creative teaching and learning, gaining knowledge of secondary schooling and developing your transferable skills. Through a two week school placement, you'll build an understanding of what a career in teaching might look like.

Growing Up Human: Early Childhood Development and Educational Futures

Discover early childhood development from the perspective of education systems that prioritise mind over body, reason over affect, work over play and competition over collaboration. Through interactive sessions, you’ll explore an alternative model for education that lays the foundation for human flourishing.

Examining Educational Policy

Strengthen your understanding of the UK’s post-war public policy, which includes education. Using critical thinking, you’ll explore the political, historical, societal and philosophical debates around education in society.

Neurodevelopmental Differences

色狗导航 the experiences of neurodivergent individuals and the theoretical and practical implications of neurodevelopmental differences. Topics may include sensory processing, speech and language, music, and emotion processing across different neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, dyslexia and ADHD.

Memory, Mind and Brain

色狗导航 how concepts of working memory have developed over time. Drawing on cognitive and neuroscientific theories and contemporary methods, you'll investigate working memory and attention, developmental aspects of working memory, and its involvement in education and learning.

Developmental Psychopathology

Learn about the interplay between the child as an active agent and the environment as sources of risk or resilience for psychopathology. You will be able to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different study designs for investigating developmental processes in psychopathology.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: the 色狗导航 will charge undergraduate home tuition fees at the upper limit as set by the UK government for the relevant academic year.
